A Classic Campbeltown Single Malt
Springbank 10 Year Old is the flagship introduction to the Springbank range and brings together many of the characteristics that have made the Campbeltown distillery so distinctive.
Produced at Springbank Distillery in Campbeltown, the whisky is lightly peated and distilled two-and-a-half times – an unusual production method that helps create Springbank’s characteristically complex style.
The 10 Year Old is matured in a carefully balanced combination of:
- 60% Bourbon Casks
- 40% Sherry Casks
The result is a whisky that combines fruit, malt, sweetness, gentle spice, peat and the distinctive maritime character associated with Campbeltown.
Made the Traditional Springbank Way
Springbank is one of Scotland’s most traditional whisky producers.
Established in 1828, the distillery continues to carry out the entire whisky-making process at its Campbeltown site – from malting the barley through to maturation and bottling.
Springbank is also the only distillery in Scotland to malt 100% of its barley using traditional floor-malting methods.
The barley is steeped and spread across Springbank’s malting floors, where it is regularly turned by hand before being dried in the kiln.
For Springbank whisky, peat and hot air are used during kilning to create its characteristic lightly peated style.
Fermentation takes place in traditional wooden washbacks made from boatskin larch and can continue for up to approximately 110 hours.
The spirit then passes through Springbank’s three copper stills using its distinctive 2.5-times distillation process.
Springbank whisky is also:
- Never chill filtered
- Never artificially coloured
- Matured in Campbeltown
- Bottled on site at Springbank
From Scotland’s Historic Whisky Capital
Campbeltown sits at the southern end of the Kintyre Peninsula on Scotland’s west coast.
Once home to more than 30 distilleries, the town became so closely associated with whisky production that it was once known as the “Whisky Capital of the World”.
Changing tastes and difficult trading conditions eventually caused most of Campbeltown’s distilleries to disappear.
By 1934, only Springbank and Glen Scotia remained in operation.
Today, Campbeltown has once again secured its place as one of Scotland’s recognised whisky-producing regions, with Springbank remaining at the heart of its remarkable whisky heritage.
Springbank – Distilling Since 1828
Springbank Distillery was officially founded in 1828 on the site of an illicit still previously used by Archibald Mitchell.
It became the 14th licensed distillery in Campbeltown during a period when the town was rapidly becoming one of Scotland’s great whisky centres.
The distillery later became part of J&A Mitchell, and the Mitchell family connection has continued for generations.
Springbank today produces three very different styles of single malt from the same distillery:
- Springbank – lightly peated and distilled 2.5 times
- Longrow – heavily peated and double distilled
- Hazelburn – unpeated and triple distilled
That combination of traditional production, distinctive distillation and Campbeltown maturation has helped Springbank develop an unmistakable house character.
Tasting Notes
Nose
A vibrant cereal character introduces the whisky, followed by fruity notes of gooseberries, mango and grapes.
Sweet vanilla pods and honeycomb develop alongside the fruit, creating a rich and inviting introduction.
Palate
The cereal and fruit character continues onto the palate with notes reminiscent of oatmeal, malted barley and orange pulp.
Sweetness builds through heather honey and hard toffee, followed by warming nutmeg and cinnamon.
Finish
A distinctive sea-salt character rounds off the dram, bringing the maritime Campbeltown influence to the finish.
Bourbon & Sherry Cask Maturation
The balance between bourbon and sherry casks plays an important part in the character of Springbank 10.
The 60% bourbon-cask component contributes vanilla, honey, fruit and lighter sweetness, while the 40% sherry-cask influence adds depth, richness and spice.
Combined with Springbank’s lightly peated spirit and long maturation in Campbeltown, the result is a complex but remarkably balanced 10 Year Old single malt.
